Willie is a self-taught artist. In his early twenties, he was asked by a jeweler friend to carve a lion pendant for a client, to be cast in silver. It was a defining moment as this was the beginning of his sculpting career. Soon after he started sculpting in clay and found it to be his Favored medium to work in.
In 2012 he started working for a bronze foundry. This is probably the most practical learning experience any aspiring sculptor can wish for. He worked on all the great SA artists' sculptures first as a bronze fettler and later as a patina master. Here he would enrich his understanding of anatomy and symmetry but mostly the importance of capturing the essence of your subject. It truly is the difference between a good piece of art and a brilliant piece of art. He has become a successful sculptor and his sculptures have been sold to clients all over the world. His work lies somewhere between the realms of realism and impressionism. He feels that any subject is so much more than a sum of all its parts and needs to evoke emotion from the viewer. Creating art is an incredibly personal experience and process. He often finds himself smiling or even forgetting to breathe while sculpting and therefore offers you more than just an object but a piece of himself. He hopes you find as much joy in it as he had creating it.
This Male Lion Sculpture is a Limited edition series of only 30.
