The abstract masterpiece "Slowly Getting Lighter" by acclaimed artist Katherine Wood captures the essence of a red morning sunrise over a desolate beach. Executed on canvas with a fusion of mixed media, it presents a textured 3D abstraction that vividly interprets the expanse of landscapes. Skillfully mounted on a deep stretcher frame, the artwork ingeniously plays with depth perception, captivating viewers from various angles.
The canvas dedicates a substantial portion to a strikingly dramatic sky, while vast open spaces intricately blend a rich palette of colours, textures, depths, and luminosity. Katherine Wood's distinct signature touch emerges within this artistic narrative—a small yet meticulously placed natural element. This touch masterfully restores balance and perspective to the emotionally charged heavens, skillfully counteracting the canvas's intensity.
Each of Katherine Wood's creations is a living testament to her artistic mastery. A truly inspirational masterpiece, "Slowly Getting Lighter" showcases the artist's ability to depict moving skies poignantly and evoke a profound sense of connection through the fusion of mixed media on canvas.
About Artist
About Artist
Artist Katherine Wood was born on 10th January 1975 in Cape Town, South Africa. Although not much is known about the artist in younger years, it is clearly apparent that an aptitude for art and painting was in her blood right from the word go!
"When one can put into perspective how small we – and our problems – are in scale to everything else, it allows for a deeper contemplation as to the meaning of this life."
Katherine Wood was born in Cape Town in 1975.
Although she studied Fine Arts at the Frank Joubert Art School and Stellenbosch University, Katherine Wood signed all her early work under a pseudonym because she felt insecure and feared rejection.
Decades later, her large, expressive artworks – a fusion of mixed media presenting an abstract interpretation of wide-open landscapes and capturing the energy of nature – are held in various private and corporate collections throughout the world, including South Africa, the UK, the USA, Canada, Germany, Australia and Switzerland.
"My art has become a meditative outlet for me as I have struggled with anxiety and depression since my teens," she reveals. "I now look at painting as an outlet for self-growth."
In 2000, Wood launched an art studio for a group of local artists in Observatory, Cape Town, displaying an eclectic range of works from paintings and sculptures to performance pieces. "Initially, I did a bit of painting on the side but didn't dare to put my art out there. Then I exhibited one of my works and sold it on the first day. I did another and sold it within a week."
Wood has exhibited in her hometown as well as London, Dubai, New York, Sydney, Brisbane, Johannesburg, Durban, Melbourne, and Beijing, among other cities. Since 2013 she has lived in Queensland, Australia, with her husband and two daughters.
