Wallace Hulley
About the Artist
Born: 1928 - Western Cape, South Africa
Wallace Hulley is largely a self-taught South African artist, who moved into watercolour and oils from a career as a lithographic printer.
A keen sense of observation coupled with a sense of dedication carried him through a haphazard learning curve of trial and error with both his oils (very textural and impasto) and the delicate wet technique used with his watercolours.
Style & Format
Wallace Hulley is magnificent in his watercolours – he actually draws with his brush! A question often asked is “How long does Mr. Hulley take to do his watercolours?” Answer – 10 minutes and forty-five years!
What is truly captivating about Wallace Hulley’s South African watercolours is the attitude of the subjects chosen – whether it be the donkey carts or his favourite Xhosa ladies, you can actually feel that you know them and have seen them before in natural surroundings.
As you look at the total composition created by this South African artist, you find your eye making up the detail which is actually not there but ought to be there, thereby putting yourself into the picture and completing the composition.
Wallace Hulley is a private individualist who is happy to teach and share his knowledge with serious pupils.
