More about Ivory

This commanding portrait of an African elephant captures the immense power, wisdom, and dignity of one of nature’s most revered creatures. Painted in a bold contemporary style, the elephant emerges from the canvas through dynamic brushstrokes and layered textures, creating a striking balance between realism and abstraction.

The composition is dominated by the animal’s massive head and sweeping tusks, which draw the viewer into an intimate encounter with this gentle giant. Rich tones of steel blue, ivory, charcoal, and warm earth reds interplay across the surface, suggesting both the ruggedness of the African landscape and the elephant’s weathered journey through it. Broad, expressive strokes lend movement and energy, while subtle drips and fragmented marks add depth and spontaneity.

The elephant’s eye serves as the emotional focal point of the piece—calm, observant, and deeply reflective. It conveys a sense of ancient knowledge and resilience, reminding us of the enduring spirit of the wild.

Both powerful and contemplative, this artwork is a celebration of Africa’s natural heritage. It speaks to themes of strength, memory, family, and survival, inviting collectors to connect with the timeless majesty of the elephant and the fragile beauty of the wilderness it calls home.

About the Artist - Anthony Gadd

About Anthony Gadd

Anthony Gadd has had a passion for art since his early school days in the Eastern Cape. A childhood spent roaming farms and interacting with wildlife gave him a deep respect for his environment, which he now translates into his South African landscape paintings.

A perfectionist at heart, Anthony Gadd chooses each subject's pose and composition carefully. But whether capturing intimate portraits of South African wildlife, an unspoiled landscape, or the sea's wildness, his work leaves room for surprise and playfulness. "My style has been described as loose, bold, and expressive. I treasure the 'happy accident' which brings gesture and freshness to each piece I create."

"I think I've matured from my original, more realistic style to become looser and more abstract." His approach includes doing most of his painting with four-inch brushes (the type used to paint a house) "so the brushwork has gesture and freshness."

Gadd has won the SA Society of Artists award for best-mixed media, holds permanent exhibitions in numerous galleries, has participated in several solo and group exhibitions, and is frequently commissioned. Gallery owners and art lovers can't get enough of his unique and dynamic approach to art.

Anthony works from his studio in Cape Town, is married to artist and author Ann, and has two children.
