Andrew Cooper is a self-taught South African artist born in Cape Town, whose distinctive style combines semi-realism with a strong sense of mysticism and atmosphere. Painting professionally since 1987, Cooper began his career working in watercolour before moving into acrylics.
Deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Western Cape, his work celebrates the region’s mountains, coastlines, rivers, vineyards and semi-desert landscapes. Working from memory and his own photography, Cooper does not simply reproduce a scene; instead, he seeks to capture its essence, emotion and sense of place.
His paintings are characterised by a confident use of colour, light, depth and scale, drawing the viewer into expansive landscapes that feel both familiar and dreamlike. Alongside his natural landscapes, Cooper explores more mystical works inspired by imagination, mythology and spirituality.
With a career spanning almost four decades, Andrew Cooper’s work offers collectors an evocative interpretation of the South African landscape—where observation, memory and imagination come together to create a distinctive sense of place.
