Charge (horizontal) | Elephant

By Sue Dickinson

  • This signed limited edition wildlife print, titled Charge, by South African wildlife artist Sue Dickinson.

This beautiful signed limited edition wildlife print titled Charge depicts an adult elephant in mock charge. In a mock charge, there’s a trumpet call, the ears spread wide, then comes a head toss and a shake. The dust flies off the bull’s head like a magical plume of dirt. He then kicks the ground and his trunk blows out more dust over his body, making him a magnificent cloudy beast.

The composition of each artwork is critical, based upon the law of proportion known as the "Golden Mean" - an aesthetic principle used by the ancient Greeks. Focusing on the animal itself, Sue’s experience has taught her that "what you leave out is just as important as what you put in". To this end, you will notice the purposeful and very impactful negative space surrounding each of her artworks. Her stark, clean images concentrate exclusively on the animal and convey the wide-open spaces of Africa.

  • Sue Dickinson was a South African artist who created paintings and prints depicting African wildlife. Her original paintings are in art collections around the world, and also feature in a prestigious collection of rare South African postage stamps.

Sue’s original paintings, wildlife prints and etchings are minimalist and elegant, concentrating exclusively on the animal, using empty white space to convey the open expanses of Africa. Sue studied B.A. (Fine Arts) at the University of the Witwatersrand and at the University of South Africa in the early 1980s. After that, she studied Graphic Design at Johannesburg Technikon, and pursued a career in design and advertising, running her own graphic design studio for several years. She began painting on a full-time basis in 1993 and concentrated on wildlife art from 2000 onwards.

Sue’s preferred painting medium was watercolour. This highly under-rated medium is widely acknowledged by artists to be the most difficult. “There is no room for error with watercolour – because once it’s on the paper, it is almost impossible to remove. Consequently, I work carefully and accurately. I’m not attempting to reproduce reality, therefore I want to work fairly loosely too,” she said.
