More about Zora

This evocative portrait captures the unmistakable face of an African wild dog, rendered in a contemporary, expressive style that balances realism with abstraction. The animal's large, alert ears dominate the composition, framing a pair of striking amber eyes that immediately draw the viewer in. Their direct gaze conveys intelligence, resilience, and quiet contemplation.

Executed with loose brushwork and delicate line sketches, the artwork appears to emerge from the canvas itself. Soft washes of blue, grey, cream, and earthy ochre blend seamlessly, creating depth while maintaining an ethereal, unfinished quality. The dripped background and fluid transitions between colour and form suggest movement and atmosphere rather than a literal depiction, inviting the viewer to engage emotionally with the subject.

The restrained palette enhances the wild dog's soulful expression, while the minimal composition focuses attention on its character and presence. By leaving portions of the face undefined, the artist creates a sense of mystery, allowing the imagination to complete the image.

Both powerful and vulnerable, this artwork celebrates one of Africa's most endangered predators. It serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty of the natural world and the importance of preserving these remarkable animals for future generations.

About the Artist - Anthony Gadd

About Anthony Gadd

Anthony Gadd has had a passion for art since his early school days in the Eastern Cape. A childhood spent roaming farms and interacting with wildlife gave him a deep respect for his environment, which he now translates into his South African landscape paintings.

A perfectionist at heart, Anthony Gadd chooses each subject's pose and composition carefully. But whether capturing intimate portraits of South African wildlife, an unspoiled landscape, or the sea's wildness, his work leaves room for surprise and playfulness. "My style has been described as loose, bold, and expressive. I treasure the 'happy accident' which brings gesture and freshness to each piece I create."

"I think I've matured from my original, more realistic style to become looser and more abstract." His approach includes doing most of his painting with four-inch brushes (the type used to paint a house) "so the brushwork has gesture and freshness."

Gadd has won the SA Society of Artists award for best-mixed media, holds permanent exhibitions in numerous galleries, has participated in several solo and group exhibitions, and is frequently commissioned. Gallery owners and art lovers can't get enough of his unique and dynamic approach to art.

Anthony works from his studio in Cape Town, is married to artist and author Ann, and has two children.
